Taking the Leap

For the last few years, I’ve been fortunate to have a day job that, not only gave me some flexibility in terms of pursuing my passion, but also paid me well enough that I could finance many of my own projects. Unfortunately, (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) those days are coming to an end. At the end of this month, I will be joining the ranks of full-time professional photographers.

This is, of course, something I’ve been pursuing for quite some time. I’m not sure there is ever an “ideal” time for taking a leap like this but, if there is, I’m not too far from it. Sure, I’d like to have a few more dollars in the bank, I wish I had paid off a few more bills and, I wish I had a few more paying shoots and gigs lined up but, overall, I think I’m ready to hit the ground running.

What’s Coming Up?

  • A big overseas trip – I’m leaving the day after Christmas to head to the Gaza Strip to do some work with a small NGO. After Gaza, I’ll be spending some time in Cairo and then heading to the West Bank to work on some independent projects. I’ll be blogging as much as I can while I’m traveling. I might not always have access to the Internet, or even electricity but, if I do, I’ll be updating this site.
  • More blogging – After I return from my overseas projects, I’ll obviously have some more free time to focus on photography and, consequently, I plan on updating this blog more regularly. Not only will this blog be updated more frequently, I plan on being as transparent as possible with regard to the trials and tribulations of someone attempting to go pro and turn it into a sustainable living.
  • Some changes – As I take stock of my photography career and online presence, I’ve been looking at changing a few things. Luckily, some of the major things (such as my new portfolio site) are already in place. But, as I begin to make adjustments to being a full-time photographer, there may be some changes in the short-term. For example, don’t be surprised to visit this blog one and find that it has a completely different look and feel. I’m still wrestling with my online presence and a few things still need to be worked out. I look forward to sharing that journey with you, as well.

What Can You Do?

I have between 3 and 6 months worth of money that I can rely on as I make this transition. Luckily, over the last few months I’ve been working really hard to slash my monthly costs and I’m almost at the “can’t cut anymore” level. I’ve never been particularly frugal but having an event like this stare me in the face has really changed my perspective.

But, if you’re interested in helping, here are a few things you can do:

I apologize in advance for the blatant self-promotion…

Donate! – If you want to make a direct impact on funding my work and travels, you can certainly just make a donation or even sign up for a monthly subscription. If you do make a donation or subscribe financially, I would be more than happy to acknowledge your support on this site if you would like that. In the future, I may look at providing exclusive content to my benefactors. This is one of those things that will be worked out as I begin to forge my path, so stay tuned!

Buy Prints! – Instead of simply donating money, you can also purchase any number of prints I have available in my photo archive. There is a large variety of work for sale there so feel free to browse around and pick something that appeals to you. I’ll also be uploading new work there over time so stay tuned for news on that as well!

Join Me on Facebook!Facebook has become the single best way for me to interact with others. I try and update my Facebook page often and I even post exclusive content there occasionally. It’s likely that, due to the nature of the site, my Facebook page will be updated more frequently than this site. You can “become a fan” by clicking here or by clicking on the Facebook badge on the right-hand side of the page.

Follow Me on Twitter! – When I am traveling, Twitter is often the best, and most lightweight, way for me to stay in touch with friends, family, and other photographers. To follow me on Twitter, click here or click on the Twitter button on the right-hand side of the page.

Spread the Word! – If you know people who might be interested in my work, show them my site or suggest they become “fans” on Facebook.

That’s it. It’s time to begin the next chapter. I’m excited, nervous, happy, and terrified. One day I feel unstoppable and the next I feel that trying to do this is insane. I guess we’ll see which it is.

In case I don’t post again before Christmas, have a very merry Christmas and I’ll talk to you again from Cairo!

What kind of work are you looking to do once you get back? I have a friend who does video production and often gets wind of various clients that need photography for events or location shoots (restaurants needing photography for websites and the like). Given your level of skill and portfolio, I think he'd feel comfortable recommending you for the job… so if that's something you're interested in, I can make the suggestion.

At the very least, it can't hurt. :-)

Hey Christine! Thanks! I'll be doing mostly commercial work but I will actually covering events, as well, given some existing clients that I have. I'll be beefing up that part of my portfolio shortly after I get back (or before I leave if I have a chance) so I would definitely welcome the referral!

Shawn, echoing the comments of others…congratulations! I hope to take the same leap myself in the coming year. I look forward to learning about your experiences, and will definitely refer or direct you to opportunities when I learn of them.

    Best!

Congratulations and Godspeed. This is not the suggestion box & you didn't ask, but have you considered a weekly podcast? If you get a decent download count of the bat (I expect you would), one or two sponsors would likely get on board with you, and you can grow from there.

Not all photogs are as gregarious and helpful as you are, so it would probably be a matter of you sitting down and just talking and occasionally Skyping in a guest.

Thanks so much Robert! And, believe me, I am open to any and all suggestions anyone wants to give, so it's definitely appreciated!!

I have actually considered doing something like that. I've been trying to determine, from a cost-benefit standpoint, how it may work. As in, how much work will it require to put together a _good_ podcast every week and, then, how much is that likely to bring in. So it's definitely a thought. Though it might not materialize until things stabilize a bit.

But keep the suggestions coming! I'm all ears!

    Thanks!

Shawn, this is a huge decision and I applaud you for it. You are certainly following your passion and doing it at the right point in your life(ie no little ones to feed). I wish you the best of luck and look forward to your output.
